A Desert Engagement Session in Yuma, Arizona | Karla & Rafael
Some love stories deserve more than a beautiful location—they deserve a place that feels as adventurous as the couple themselves.
When Karla and Rafael, a couple from Mexicali, Baja California, began planning their engagement session, they knew they wanted something different. Instead of choosing a traditional park or urban backdrop, they envisioned a landscape that reflected their adventurous spirit and their love for exploring together. The Arizona desert offered exactly that.
We met at County 19th, between San Luis and Somerton, Arizona, where the rugged beauty of the Altar Desert, abandoned concrete canals, and endless blue skies created a setting unlike any other. It was the perfect place to tell their story.
WHY THEY CHOSE THE ARIZONA DESERT
The desert has a way of slowing everything down. Away from the noise of the city, every laugh, every glance, and every quiet moment feels more meaningful.
As we explored the area, Karla and Rafael completely forgot about the camera. They laughed together, walked hand in hand through the desert trails, and embraced every moment. Those genuine interactions became the heart of their gallery.
The warm earth tones of the desert paired beautifully with the weathered concrete structures, while the vibrant Arizona sky added the perfect contrast. The result was a collection of timeless photographs that feel authentic, romantic, and uniquely theirs.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ENGAGEMENT LOCATIONS NEAR YUMA
One of the things I love most about photographing couples is introducing them to locations they may have never considered.
County 19th is one of those hidden gems. Located just minutes from Yuma, San Luis, and the California border, it offers wide-open landscapes, dramatic textures, and some of the most beautiful golden-hour light in Southern Arizona.
For couples traveling from Mexicali, it's also an easy destination that feels worlds away from everyday life.
Whether you're dreaming of a romantic sunset session or something a little more adventurous, the Arizona desert provides an unforgettable backdrop that never goes out of style.
PLANNING YOUR OWN DESERT ENGAGEMENT SESSION
If you're considering engagement photos in the Arizona desert, here are a few tips to make the most of your session:
- Schedule your session about an hour before sunset for the softest, most flattering light.
- Choose neutral or earth-tone outfits that complement the natural colors of the desert.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking between locations, and bring your favorite pair for portraits.
- Don't be afraid of a little wind—some of the most romantic images happen when nature becomes part of the story.
- Most importantly, focus on each other. The best photographs come from genuine connection, not perfect poses.
A PHOTOGRAPHER'S PERSPECTIVE
One of my favorite moments from Karla and Rafael's session happened just before sunset. The desert became completely quiet, the light turned golden, and for a few minutes it felt like they had the entire landscape to themselves.
Those are the moments I love to capture—not the perfectly posed ones, but the real ones. The laughter that can't be planned, the quiet smiles, and the way two people naturally look at each other when they forget the camera is there. That's what transforms beautiful photographs into meaningful memories.
As a Yuma, Arizona wedding and engagement photographer, my goal is to create images that feel honest, timeless, and deeply personal. Whether you're planning an engagement session near Yuma, traveling from Mexicali, or searching for a unique desert location in Arizona, I'd love to help tell your story in a way that feels true to who you are.
