Some of my favorite wedding photos don’t happen at the “perfect” location. Sometimes it’s a simple wall, a parking lot, the side of a building, or a spot most people would walk right past.

For these wedding portraits, we didn’t need an elaborate backdrop. I used the existing architecture, sunset, reflections, shadows, off-camera flash, and a few creative techniques to completely change the way the location photographed.

One moment feels soft and romantic. Another uses the bride’s dress and natural light to create movement. As the sun disappeared, I introduced flash and used the cars, street lights, and surrounding environment to create something more dramatic. Even a simple exterior wall became the perfect place for a silhouette.

That’s one of the things I love most about photography: the location doesn’t have to be extraordinary to create an extraordinary photograph.

Light, composition, perspective, posing, and technique can transform an everyday space into something completely different. My goal isn’t just to find pretty places—it’s to look at what’s already around us and figure out how to turn it into part of your story.

A Tip for Future Couples

Don’t worry if your wedding venue doesn’t have endless “Instagram-worthy” photo locations. A good wedding photographer should be able to work with the environment, available light, and the timeline of your wedding day. Sometimes the places you least expect end up creating the photos you remember most.
